Thanks, Meghan! That specific phrasing took a little while to surface. I was aiming to have all the lines pretty much the same length, and that tension kept forcing me to rephrase. It was originally two (far less effective) lines:

But the sea’s got problems of its own that no fresh water can assuage.
The ocean swallows mountains whole in one ambivalent, eons-spanning gulp.

…followed by a joke about indigestion so bad I won’t even reprint it here…
